I've heard the expression " free love" what is it ?

i know it means love with no cost right? with no ties right? how is that even possible? there's always a cost to both people and whoever is involved. i don't understand how love () could be construed as trivial in any society. personally i wouldn't think much of myself if i just gave it away to anyone anywhere. maybe someone could make me understand such a thing.. i know judgie judgie.. please answer honestly...thanx
